France builds first ever solar road, The way of the future, or expensive folly ?

If it proves a success solar roads could power 8% of the country

So France’s Minister of Environment Ségolène Royal has officially opened the world’s first solar road this week with one kilometer and 2,880 solar panels in Tourouvre-au-Perche.

The road is designed to produce sufficient power to electrify street lighting in the village, home to 3,400 inhabitants.

However this is just a start of what France hope to be 1000km of roadways covered in solar panels in next five years.

If French experiment proves a success longer term we could see every single road in the EU covered with this photovoltaic technology which could cut fossil fuel dependency dramatically.

French solar roads across the nation could power up to 8% of total energy needs of entire France, incentive enough perhaps to consider adopting solar roads everywhere.

Netherlands also tested concept of solar pathways and bicycle lanes, but French are going one step further and plan to build 1000km of solar roads and if this proves a success, expand on to entire road network.

Solar panels intended to cover 1000km of French roads are 7mm thick, Colas WattWay, company behind the technology that will help France go carbon neutral in very short space of time.

Solar Panels can withstand the weight of 40 ton truck and have been extensively tested. France plans to hike taxes on fossil fuels and heavy pollutants to finance the project.

If project proves a success, which I hope it does, this idea might be adopted across the world, with Chinese firms already eying the technology.

South Korea on the other hand has built photovoltaic array along the motorway at an angle facing south, something that has proven to be the most efficient way to utilize Sunlight.

Perhaps more prudent and financially sound way to go.
