Borrego Solar Systems, Inc., a leading financier, designer, developer and installer of grid-tied solar photovoltaic (PV) systems responsible for installing more than 30 percent of the landfill solar capacity operating in Massachusetts, joined the Town of Easton on April 30 to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the installation of a 1.9-megawatt (MW) solar energy system on the Town’s former landfill.
Secretary of the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs Richard Sullivan and Department of Energy Resources (DOER) Commissioner Mark Sylvia spoke at the event in praise of the Town’s extensive energy efficiency and renewable energy efforts. Financed by Borrego Solar through a power purchase agreement (PPA) that covered all upfront costs, the project will save the Town approximately $185,000 annually and nearly $4,500,000 over the course of the 20-year contract.
The installation, which will produce the equivalent quantity of electricity consumed by 235 homes in one year, is part of the Town’s overall commitment to sustainability. As a designated Massachusetts Green Community, Easton has implemented numerous energy efficiency initiatives such as LED lighting retrofits and thermostat controls within public buildings, and is currently installing LED streetlights and insulated garage doors on Department of Public Works buildings and fire stations. As a result of these and other initiatives, the Town is on track to meet its Green Communities commitment of reducing energy consumption by 20 percent by the end of 2014.
