BioSolar transforms 1958 solar concept to 2010 solar reality
Solar is nothing new to John. In 1958 John’s father, who was the head of engineering at University of Queensland, built a solar house. There is now a building on the campus named after him, the ‘Mansergh Shaw building’.
John said BioSolar was in the right place at the right time. All it took was a knock a the door.
“I’ve always thought it was a good idea. BioSolar came and knocked on the door at the very time we were starting to think about getting solar power.
“It was quite an opportune time when there was a big push for solar,” John said.
As an engineer himself, John sat down with the salesperson scribbling down numbers and working out figures for around three hours.
“He supplied me with a program of how much we should get per day in terms of generation and what the efficiencies would be,” John said.
Since the installation at the end of 2010, John and his wife are pleased to be receiving credited bills of $80 and above with their 3kW system.
“I take weekly readings of the inverters and the power meter and compare the two to see if everything is okay,” he said.
John said that a lot of his friends have opted for the 1.5kW systems and are now thinking that ‘although it didn’t cost much, it’s not giving me that much.’
He said that the size of system you choose is very important.
John said you have to think about the way you use power. He took on board the suggestion from BioSolar to put his pool filter on early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun isn’t generating as much.
“Unless the grandkids are here — then we have to run it all day,” he said smiling.
