Off Grid Electricity in Remote Alaska Part 1 Battery Bank

In this series I’ll show you how we get our electricity and then how it is used here in the Alaskan Bush. First off is the battery bank. I would not recommend using group 31 batteries for a house bank but for logistical reasons they work good enough for us. We never let the battery voltage get below 12 volts(50% charge), so the we don’t worry about damaging the batteries. There are some old batteries and some new ones in the bank. When a battery goes bad I built the system so it can be swapped out in a matter of minutes. Not the most efficient way to do things but it beats having to spend thousands of dollars in one shot on a whole battery bank when it goes bad.
