Occupation forces delivering demolition orders for Comet-ME renewable energy water pump system, Quwawise, South Hebron hills, 2.3.2014
Vered-Roza Bitan-Shoshani:
Comet-ME is an Israeli-Palestinian organization providing green energy and clean water services to off-grid communities, using environmentally and socially sustainable methods. We facilitate social and economic empowerment to some of the poorest and most marginalized communities in the Occupied Palestinian Territories in the West Bank through the construction of renewable energy systems (wind and solar), clean potable water solutions, capacity building and reliable maintenance.
Comet-ME builds and installs hybrid wind and solar stand-alone mini-grids and community-level clean water solutions. We manage the process from conception to completion. Through direct and long-term involvement with the communities, we gain a better understanding of their needs and we are able to design the systems accordingly and ensure the long-term sustainability of the energy and water infrastructure.
Comet-ME has designed and installed renewable energy systems throughout 24 communities in the South Hebron hills of the West Bank, providing clean energy to more than 1,600 residents. Today, Comet-ME is a key player in the field of renewable energy for off-grid rural communities. We partner with aid organizations and technological initiatives around the globe to get the best results on the ground.
Capacity-building is a top priority for us. We have trained a professional team of Israelis and Palestinians to work in the field of renewable energy. Comet-ME is committed to provide basic energy services to all off-grid Palestinian communities in the South Hebron hills.
Please note that all Jewish settlements in South Hebron Hills, including the illegal outposts, receive electricity and water from Israel, and have approval to build solar systems ( http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0 , 7340, L- 3938894 , 00.html ). “For people who experience daily dependence on the forces of nature for water, light, pasture, and survival itself, a system that uses of the sunlight and the winds provides a new dimension to their life with nature — one that is a bit more balanced, empowered and pro-active.”
But there is a factor that opposes this project — the Civil Administration seeks to demolish the solar power systems that constitute now the sole power source for the Palestinian communities in South Hebron hills. Last night, Civil Administration officials led by Carlos Ben Hayon accompanied by soldiers handed Comet Center of wind vane solar water pump demolition order in attempt to demonstrate the Civil Administration objection for this initiative.
This is an example of Israel’s occupation bureaucracy in South Hebron hill. The Civil Administration officials do not care for the basic needs of these poor and marginalized communities, only people who are subordinates who do not obey of the Israeli discriminatory legal system in the West Bank. This discriminatory policy denies permits for such sustainable energy facilities because the Civil Administration neglected to prepare master plans for these communities, nor it provided infrastructure facilities for these communities, and because of this neglect the Civil Administration demands these communities to destroy these facilities that were built without a permit. This policy forces these communities to seek aid and support from local and international NGO’s in order to fulfill basic human rights.
