A new roof project is a great time to install solar. That proved the case with the fun loving couple and their new home in Southern California. The concrete tile roof was stripped and wood replaced where the termites had their homes. At the new wood stage is when the roofers call ABC Solar.
Our team were presented with fitting the solar array on a roof that has many angles and undefined boundaries between the two-unit townhome. We invited the fire marshal of the local city to visit our installation in progress. We needed to make sure we met his new ruleset for solar installations, namely 3 feet from bearing wall bottom and sides and 6 inches from ridge. (just opposite of the rest of the state of California, but I know… roofs are different here…)
I have heard it all over my 16 years designing and building solar systems.
The other change was opting to be flush to the north roof. Yep. I did that. The math showed the I would lose 25 percent on an annual production basis. So I added three panels to that array to compensate. The final look is so cool and I am very happy to not have a reverse tilt!
This install features 24 SolarWorld 285 watt solar PV panels and 2 Heliodyne solar thermal panels.
