Installing solar panels at QVMAG – City of Launceston

The City of Launceston is installing a 50kw solar panel system on the roof of the Queen Victoria’s main gallery building.

The system comprises 157 solar panels which are being installed on the saw-tooth roof, and have an expected lifespan of more than 25 years.

The new solar panel system is expected to decrease the amount of power used by the museum by an estimated 10 per cent.

Energy efficiency measures introduced by the City of Launceston at Council-managed facilities have saved 1.4 million kilowatt hours of electricity, equal to a saving of $265,000 per year.

Since 2012, the Council has undertaken a number of energy saving projects, including the replacement of light globes and fluorescent tubes with LED globes, and the installation of solar hot water systems, and intelligent control systems.
