Gallium arsenide (GaAs) is a compound of gallium and arsenic, also referred to as compound III-V semiconductor. It has extensive applications in devices such as microwave, frequency ICs, monolithic microwave ICs, solar cells, infrared light-emitting diodes, and optical windows. GaAs is used as a replacement for silicon because of its enhanced electronic properties. The increasing adoption of smartphones and tablets is one of the key factors driving the growth of this market. The shipments of smartphone will reach more than 2 billion units by 2020 due to the widespread availability of low-cost phones in countries like China and India and the increasing penetration of the Internet worldwide. The growth of the smartphones market will drive the demand for GaAs devices used in mobile handsets, particularly GaAs power amplifiers. GaAs content in a smartphone helps accommodate many frequency bands like 3G and 4G networks.
