✔✔ The basic concepts of business won’t get you far on Youtube in its current environment.

1. know your audience
2. create quality focused content
3. build trust
4. rinse and repeat

1. Youtube secretly changed how a person finds videos. Neither creators nor many viewers were made aware of this change. It was discrete and not communicated. Namely a person must either take additional steps to get notified of new videos from their favorite channels or they must now navigate to a new location to find the latest videos from these channels. As anyone who understands UI and UX, this is a terrible move for any website without some hand holding. Why? Because while it might seem intuitive, users get comfortable with how something works and they trust it. They don’t question it. Think about when Windows added a Start Button or Apple recently took away the headphone jack on the iPhone. These seemingly tiny changes causes a HUGE ripple in their user base. Youtube is no different. These unannounced changes left the community to fend for itself. None of this has ANYTHING to do with knowing your audience, creating quality content, building trust.

2. This change has been compounded by another huge change and that is in the recommended, suggested and promoted algorithms used to help people find more videos they might like and keep people on the website longer so generate more views for Youtube’s advertisers. As a creator builds trust and earns his/her viewers time by doing all the basics of videos that creator is now drawing those people to Youtube over other platforms like Netflix, TV etc. That means we, the creators, are who draw people to Youtube. However Youtube is betraying the people who draw people to Youtube by promoting often low quality, deceptive, provocative or useless content over and above that which the user has indicated they want to view by subscribing to specific channels. They even go so far as to ignore the users input when “not interested” is used to indicated a users disinterest in a particular topic, channel or even specific video. No creator out there would object to new and different channels be promoted to viewers as this is a critical component to being discovered on Youtube. Every channel began somewhere and many, not all, rely on Youtube algorithms to suggest their videos to viewers so they can be discovered. Unfortunately Youtube has not shown the same loyalty to it’s creators or audience by listening when they indicated “not interested” and by not promoting useless, tasteless garbage on the very channels who have worked hard to bring those viewers back to Youtube, over some other media form.

So while you’re correct, the basics of business apply, you’d be remiss to think that is all that is needed in this current climate to even maintain, let alone grow, a channel. Many of the veterans have lost large amounts of viewership yet have no lost their quality, focus or even trust. Youtube has chosen to divert their viewers to other content. Thats like you giving me a place to sell my milk, which I do for years and build a loyal customer base, then you move my milk stand to the back corner and put a porno or tabloid stand where my milk stand used to by and offer free milk to people who come to my booth because it’s so profitable to have a prono stand there that you can afford to give milk away for free. Sure people can come hunting for my milk or milk stand, but why would they? They can get milk and titillation or some other psychological stimulation from you even though I’m the one who build the business and brought the people to the stand in the first place.

So many shallow minding people watch this video and take away that we’re whining babies who feel entitled to viewers.

Far from this we’re using what little platform we have to stand up and try to educate the community on why this problem exists, what the real problem is, how its affecting the community (NOT USSSSSSSS!!!!!!) and if they care enough about the community and their favorite channels what exactly they can do to be a part of the solution instead of naively, or blatantly, being a part of the problem.
