“Kathy Miller was my wife. She was very into the fact of the sport being fun for the people and fun for the dogs and we decided that it was a good idea to take care of some of the people from Europe who came to the US for a contest. They were happy with the way we treated them and they tried to start the same thing in this country, so it’s not you just have to win, it’s go out with the dog and the family and have a good day.

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Bruno Icobet, freestyle class winner:
“The hardest thing in this competition was to protect my dog because she was injured yesterday, was limping last night, limping in the morning and I thought it wouldn’t be wise to compete but I gave it a shot.”

STORYLINE:
Families from across Hungary on Sunday turned up at Budapest for one of the first national championships in a ‘sport’ claimed to be one of the fastest-growing in the world.
It’s called ‘disc dogging’, described as four-legged frisbee, six legged if you include the essential human component.
Owners and trainers put their animals, one by one, through a series of competition rounds, each judged by a panel looking for rapport between animal and trainer and gymnastic prowess by the dog.
“It’s not you just have to win, it’s go out with the dog and the family and have a good day,” said Mike Miller, panel judge
The sport is big in the US, with contests in most states but numbers of afficionados are growing in Europe, with strong contingents in Italy, Belgium, Germany and Hungary.
Various categories of competition include long distance throwing and catching, freestyle, novice with each category divided into small and large dogs.
