This is a very simple automatic charge controller with only 6 components. It uses a 10amp 28 volt relay to control the charging. Charging current can be .5A to 10A. A 1K potentiometer adjusts the cut out voltage to around 13.7 volt. Cut in voltage is 11.5 volt. You can adjust the cut in voltage by using a resistor different from the default value of 270 ohm. You can use wall wart type power plug with an open voltage of around 18 volts as a power source. Add a diode and you can make this a solar charge controller. The circuit is from “Talking Electronics.” Making this functional controller is a great learning experience for me, including the way to connect the 10 amp relay.
