Choosing a Solar Inverter

In order for your solar panels to work, you’ll need inverters. Inverters convert the sun’s energy from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC), making it available for use in your home.

There are a few types of inverters to consider: micro and string. A micro inverter is located on the back of each panel, allowing them to operate independently. So if one panel is shaded, the rest will keep generating. String inverters are a little different. Located in a convenient place in your house, they allow you to disconnect from the power grid and plug directly into your solar system. String inverters are a must if you want to use your solar system in an emergency. The disadvantage is that because the panels are connected, if one panel is shaded the rest will act as if they are shaded too.

To combat this problem, Solar Edge has developed a hybrid string inverter that uses power optimizers in the same way as micro inverters. In this video, we discuss in-depth the differences among the types of inverters and the benefits/drawbacks of each. We’ll help you decide which type to get for your system.
