Solar Panel – 160 Watt – Monocrystalline (12V charging) Initial Testing

http://tinyurl.com/160-monocrystallines

These are the largest 12V charging panels I’ve come across to sell. They are a little bit more expensive than the polycrystalline, but offer some good power output for the physical size. Ideal for RV use where you can only fit one panel on the roof (or two – size constraints).

Just for fun I hooked them up to (2) 50 watt Halogen 12V lamps in series. The series connection of bulbs measured 0.7 ohms cold. Of course, that will change once they are heated up. The panels was putting out 18 watts with the sun completely obscurred by clouds, and 80 watts partially obscurred. That said, the bulb configuration will only draw — so much — current. The two bulbs will draw under 100 watts when run conventionally @ 12V in parallel. About 4A each, I think. I thought I’d try this test though, it is interesting, if not scientific. Please don’t get your scientific theories all in a knot… because the truth of the matter is, the only way to test a panel scientifically is in a lab, with a sun lamp — real sun is not how it’s done, so here today, I’ll do what I want, and what interested me… and today, that was to see real power… behind partial clouding.
