Off Grid Solar Power – Inexpensive water pump
As I move to going off the grid this year, I’m checking out ways that I can eliminate mains power. My main water supply now is a 1000 gallon rainwater tank, with the 24000 gallon rainwater tank as back up. I have a 12V solar system set up with a pressure pump to pump the water from the small tank to the house for washing, cooking, cleaning and drinking, but I also need to be able to transfer water from the big tank to the small one. This is what I’ve come up with…
A cheap 12V pond pump, a 10W solar panel, a cheap charge controller, a switch and a second-hand car battery. I reckon I won’t need to use this more than three or four times a year, so it’s more than sufficient for my needs.
The total cost will be about $70. $30 for the panel, $18 for the pump, about $10 for the charge controller and a few dollars for wiring, a fuse and a switch.
