Nowadays its not difficult to find households using solar panels to harness the power of the sun for green energy.
How about an entire village that’s self sufficient and eco friendly that way?
Kim Mok-yeon takes us to some of those “energy independent” towns.
Some 43 households live in this energy independent town.
There are solar energy facilities installed on the roof of every house.
Residents can save a lot of money as they use the energy created through these facilities at a cheaper price, and can even use the energy left the following month.

“Before we installed it, we paid about 84 U.S. dollars a month. But now we pay less than 20, so we can save about 60 dollars a month.”

On top of the community hall, there is a larger Photovoltaic Power Generation System installed, which can create up to 3,000 kilowatts per hour.
The town sells the energy obtained to the Korea Electric Power Corporation in return for more than 200 U.S. dollars which they use for the development of the village.

“It’s still difficult for residents to pay for the entire costs of the renewable energy facilities, so currently the respective provinces are paying for 90 percent of the expenses.”

The government is supporting the installation of such renewable energy facilities as it can help villages become energy independent and can also help in saving the environment.
As of today, there are 10 towns that call themselves energy independent in the Gyeonggi-do province.
The government plans to increase the number of these energy independent towns to 100 by 2030.
