The solar cells I used are 800mA photovoltaic and as you can see are not very efficient – I doubt if they are more than 10% efficient. Most of the ‘light energy’ falling on them is transferred to heat or reflected instead of being ‘turned into’ electricity. But that’s why its useful having toys like this so that pupils can learn about the challenges associated with harnessing alternative energy supplies.
Even with sunshine the small size of these solar cells will always limit the amount of electricity generated. The motor will spin much more easily mounted vertically – see my ‘solar-powered zoetrope’ video in this series.
All of the materials and components used are available from my supply service (UK only) and the solar car is also available as a kit.
