The parent company of a Zhejiang solar panel factory is promising to do whatever is necessary to clean up its toxic chemical problems. This comes after hundreds of local residents protested at the factory last week. The company apologized, releasing a press statement with an explanation for the waste, but it still might not be convincing for local residents.
JinkoSolar Holding—the parent company of Zhejiang Jinko—promised to clean up the toxic waste that hundreds of local residents had protested.
In a statement released on Monday, JinkoSolar stated that production has temporarily stopped at the Haining factory in Zhejiang Province.
The company seems to be downplaying the environmental concern—stating, “A small amount of solid waste containing fluoride” has been discharged into a nearby brook.
It explains that a preliminary inquiry reveals that improper storage of the chemical waste may have caused the chemical to spill into the river.
JinkoSolar states that it’s conducting a thorough assessment and seeking cooperation from an independent organization to get to the real cause of the problem.
Beginning last Thursday, more than 500 residents protested violently and stormed the company complex. Angry demonstrators overturned company vehicles and police cars.
Despite an apology from the company, residents in the city of Haining are still wary and concerned about the effects of pollution on their health.
Pollution is a looming dilemma for the Chinese regime. Last month, a similar incident occurred in Dalian where more than 12-thousand protesters convinced local authorities to relocate the petrochemical plant, after a toxic chemical spill scare.
