  • Bimini, wind generator, radar and old solar panels… goodbye! It’s time to upgrade our solar and make some big changes on Varuna! Oh, and we also get to upgrade ours, though not by choice…

In this episode, we do a bit of exploring in San Diego visiting Balboa park, then get to work on our big solar upgrade. We start by removing pretty much everything from our cockpit to make way for two giant, 320-watt LG solar panels. We decide our flimsy bimini structure is not strong enough to hold them, so we begin to build a new “solar arch” ourselves from 1” stainless tubing and rail fittings.

For those of you who want to know know the nuts and bolts of our solar upgrade, here is exactly what we installed:

    Panels: LG 320-watt http://www.lg.com/us/commercial/solar-panels/lg-LG320N1C-G4

    Fittings used: Seadog brand
