Fled from a food supply disaster in Georgia to rural Alabama, bought acreage, set up an off-grid solar system, started growing food in his 100 foot greenhouse, grows 4000 tilapia per year in his leading-edge yet bargain aquaponics setup.
Aquaponics is a self-sustaining system that supports itself: tilapia, duckweed, added a reed bed to filter out the solids, mimicking a real pond, IBC=plastic tank the size of a pallet, even sweet potatoes, turnips, carrots, and horseradish!
Greenhouse: grow in the ground, grow vertically for
20’ x 50’ raised 375 tomato plants, 400 lb of tomatoes every week for 4 months, watermelons, butternut squash, antelopes, honeydews. Soil is poor red clay, water through season in worm casting compost tea, ground cover, add a cup of two of rabbit manure, dried all they could, canned all they could.
Worms in aquaponics to clean up and keep it from going aerobic, 55 gal drum with fine mesh in aerated water with 2c molasses, bacteria in compost eats molasses, supersedes the plant.
Several crop failures: rainy weather rotted corn seeds in the ground, then drought, so no corn for the chickens, had to buy feed, now trying to avoid corn dependency. Squash beetles damaged squash crop, white butterflies laid eggs on every single leaf wiped out kale crop – treated with Dr. Bronner’s suds, jumping spiders eat up squash bugs & white butterfly larvae.
100 MPH wind: ripped off greenhouse mylar, expensive to replace.
